The Practical Nursing Program at Itasca provides a variety of carefully selected instruction resources and clinical practice experiences, which enable the student to meet the basic needs of patients and function as a practical nurse. Nurses are in high demand. Career opportunities for nurses include:
- Medical Clinics
- Nursing Homes
- Home Health Care
- Industry and Military
Clinical practice is directly related to classroom instruction. Clinical experiences include community hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics. Additionally students may observe school nursing, experience and interact with community based mental health services, and gain maternal child and early childhood experience in local medical clinics.
Successful completion of the ICC Practical Nursing Program enables students to sit for the NCLEX-PN Minnesota State Board of Nursing Practical Nursing Licensure Exam to obtain licensure in Minnesota. A student may then choose to career ladder in healthcare without loss of credits and allows for articulation to RN programs throughout Minnesota.
Continuation in Program: The Practical Nursing faculty determines progress standards for students in the program. A copy of these requirements is distributed to students at the beginning of the program. Courses each semester must be completed with a “C” grade or higher to continue to the next semester (“C-” grades do not meet the requirement).
Career Option: Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council License Examination for Licensed Practical Nursing. Licensed Practical Nurses are now employed in hospitals, clinics, schools, industry, nursing homes, private homes and home care agencies, and the armed services.
Accreditation: The Minnesota Board of Nursing and North Central Association of Colleges and Schools approve the program. We are currently seeking national accreditation through ACEN.
